Variational
VAR token · peer-to-peer derivatives protocol (Omni app) on Arbitrum · token not launched yet, launch planned for Q4 2026
Variational runs a large, real trading product: DefiLlama shows about $980M of open interest on 27 Oct 2026 and $16.1B of 30-day volume. It has named founders and backers such as Dragonfly, Bain Capital Crypto and Coinbase Ventures. The VAR token has not launched; the launch is planned for Q4 2026 with no date. We say “Not yet” because the terms that show whether the token is fairly built are still missing: total supply, the split of the 50% for team and investors, the rules of the 18% reserve, and audit reports we could not open. Every trade on Omni also has one counterparty, whose positions are not published.
In plain words
Variational is a trading platform for “perpetual” contracts, a way to bet on prices with borrowed money. People really use it: about a billion dollars of bets are open on it today.
Its coin, VAR, does not exist yet. The project has said who will get what share (32% for users, 18% for a reserve, 50% for team and investors), but not how many coins that is, when they start, or how the reserve will be used.
Every trader on the platform trades against one company-run pool, and we could not open the security audits the project mentions. We cannot say it is ready until those answers are public. This is not advice to buy or sell, and we do not predict the price.
NOTR is a new independent project. We send the project our questions and give it 7 days to reply; the window closes on 3 Nov 2026. Not investment advice, and we do not assess price.
“Not yet” means there are open questions that the project can answer, after which we review it again. It is not “Not ready”, and it says nothing about where the price goes.
- 1. Is it safe?◐Partly
Named auditors and an active bug bounty of up to $100,000 are positives. But there is no token contract to read yet, we could not open the audit reports, and every trade goes against one pool whose positions are not published.
- 2. Are the price and structure fair??Open
Total supply, the team and investor split, the date and the reserve rules are not published. A 12-month lock and at least three years of vesting for insiders is a long schedule; the promised buybacks look small next to the revenue we could find.
- 3. Does it keep its word?◐Mixed
The token launch slipped from Q3 to Q4, and the bug bounty went live in March. Most token promises are not due yet.
Full reasoning and what would change the verdict: see below.
Summary: six findings
- Product. Omni is a zero-fee perpetual futures app on Arbitrum. Users trade against the Omni Liquidity Provider (OLP), a pool that prices from exchange feeds and hedges elsewhere, rather than against other users (Fortune, datawallet).
- Usage. DefiLlama shows open interest of $980M on 27 Oct 2026, up from $430M on 4 Jan, with a peak of $1.14B on 6 Oct. Its page shows $16.07B of 30-day volume and $122.0B cumulative. Other pages claim $200B to $275B cumulative (DefiLlama).
- Backers. A $50M Series A on 20 May 2026 led by Dragonfly, with Bain Capital Crypto and Coinbase Ventures, after a $10.3M seed in Oct 2024. Founders Lucas Schuermann and Edward Yu; headquarters in the Cayman Islands; 24 employees (Fortune).
- Token. VAR has not launched. The launch is planned for Q4 2026, after slipping from Q3. Announced shares: 32% to users by points, fully unlocked at launch; 18% ecosystem reserve; 50% team and investors with a 12-month lock and at least three years of linear vesting. Total supply is not published (Bitrue).
- Safety signals. Audits by Zellic and Spearbit are named; an Immunefi bug bounty has offered up to $100,000 for critical contract bugs since 16 Mar 2026. We could not open the audit reports (Immunefi).
- Structure. One counterparty for every trade, positions not fully disclosed, quotes can be rejected in fast markets, and the US and Canada are excluded. Treasury revenue, which funds the promised buybacks, was about $0.65M over four weeks in one report (KuCoin).
We found no sign of wrongdoing. What we have is a real product with a token whose key terms are not yet public. This review has no on-chain (grade A) source because the token contract does not exist yet; see Method.
In favour, and of concern
Both lists use only facts that appear in this review, with the section where each is shown.
In favour
- A product people use: about $980M of open interest on 27 Oct 2026, more than double the Jan level (Business).
- Named founders, named lead investors and a $50M Series A in May 2026 (Team and backers).
- Audits by two named firms, and a live Immunefi bug bounty of up to $100,000 (NOTR checks).
- Insiders get a 12-month lock and then at least three years of linear vesting; unclaimed user tokens are burned (Token and market).
- Buyback terms were tightened from a discretionary share of fees to 100% of treasury-directed revenue (Promises).
- Of 8 logged promises, 1 was met and 1 was missed; the other 6 cannot be checked or are not due (Promises).
Of concern
- Total supply, the split between team and investors, the launch date and the rules for the 18% reserve are not published (Token and market).
- One counterparty (the OLP) sits opposite every trade, its positions are not fully disclosed, and it can reject quotes in fast markets (Risk register).
- We could not open the audit reports; DefiLlama lists no audits, and one summary said full reports were not public (NOTR checks, Data conflicts).
- Public figures for cumulative volume range from $122B to over $275B (Data conflicts).
- Volume and open interest grew during a points programme; the organic share is unknown (Business).
- The first-year free float would be mostly the user airdrop, with insiders locked and the 18% reserve released at the Foundation’s discretion (Token and market).
- The US and Canada are excluded, and the legal entity is not named (Team and backers).
- The project has not yet answered our questions (Questions).
Where we stand: “Not yet”. A project must pass all four required checks to go to a NOTR vote; for Variational, 1 is partial and 3 cannot be run until the token contract exists, so it cannot go to a vote yet. The list above shows what would move it either way.
Business and product
Variational describes itself as infrastructure for trading and settling perpetuals and other derivatives directly between parties. Omni, its trading app on Arbitrum, charges no trading fees; the OLP earns the difference between buy and sell prices. A second app, Pro, serves institutional over-the-counter trading (DefiLlama).

Team, backers and legal status
| Item | What the sources say | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Founders | Lucas Schuermann (CEO) and Edward Yu. They previously ran a quantitative trading firm that was acquired by Digital Currency Group, and left in 2021 to start Variational. 24 employees in May 2026. | Fortune |
| Funding | $50M Series A announced on 20 May 2026, led by Dragonfly, with Bain Capital Crypto and Coinbase Ventures. A $10.3M seed in Oct 2024, led by Bain Capital Crypto and Peak XV Partners. A $1.5M round in Jun 2025 with Mirana, Caladan and Zoku. Total over $60M. | Fortune; DefiLlama (seed and 2025 round); datawallet (total) |

Token and market
Live numbers load here and need JavaScript. The dated figures below do not.
The token does not trade yet. CoinGecko has a page for Variational (VAR) with no price, market cap or supply on 27 Oct 2026. Everything below is the project’s announcement, repeated by media pages.
- 32% genesis airdrop to users, in proportion to points; fully unlocked at launch; unclaimed tokens are burned
- 18% ecosystem reserve, managed by the Variational Foundation; no release schedule published
- 50% team and investors: 12-month lock after launch, then linear vesting over at least three years. The split between team and investors is not disclosed
Sources: KuCoin, Bitrue, datawallet; the announcement was reported on 24 Sep 2026. The percentages are shares of a total supply that has not been published, so we cannot give a token count or a valuation.
- 32% unlocked at launch, held by users who earned points
- 50% locked for the first 12 months
- 18% reserve, released when the Foundation decides
In the first year, the tokens that are certainly free are the users’ airdrop. Whether and when the reserve is used is not published. This is a reading of the announced terms, not a forecast.
- lock: nothing unlocks
- linear unlock; “at least three years” means this bar shows the minimum, it may run longer
- no schedule published
The launch is planned for Q4 2026, so the first insider unlock would fall in Q4 2027 at the earliest. Individual team members have personal vesting terms that are not detailed.
Source: KuCoin (a news flash, grade C). The treasury share is 20% of spreads today and may change (Bitrue). The last row is what remains after the other three; the source does not state it. We could not confirm these figures: DefiLlama has no fees page for Variational.
Our arithmetic, not a forecast. The project says 100% of treasury-directed revenue will go to a buyback and burn of VAR. If the treasury kept earning $0.65M every four weeks, a year of buybacks would be about $8.5M. Pre-launch guesses by others put the token’s fully diluted value at $1.5B and upward (datawallet; Polymarket median $1.53B per KuCoin). Against $1.53B, $8.5M is about 0.6%. The point is the scale of the buyback promise, not a view on value.
| Item | Value | Source and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Token contract | None yet | VAR has not been issued, so there is no address to check on a block explorer. |
| Launch date | Q4 2026 | Announced on 24 Sep 2026 after slipping from Q3. No date. KuCoin |
| Total supply | Not published | Only percentages are announced. Bitrue |
| Price and market cap | None | CoinGecko’s VAR page shows no price on 27 Oct 2026. Some pages quote over-the-counter trades of points at $20 to $26; points are not tokens. |
| Airdrop terms | Per account, in proportion to points; at least 1 point; claimants must sign the VAR terms | Unclaimed tokens are burned. 150,000 points are issued weekly until launch. Bitrue |
| Token use | Outlined, not final | Governance over protocol parameters, a planned community vault for OLP depositors, buyback and burn; staking or fee-sharing is possible. Full utility is to be published closer to launch. |
| Buyback | 100% of treasury-directed revenue | Earlier documents described only a discretionary part of fees. The treasury gets 20% of OLP spreads now. Implementation details not published. |
Promises and deadlines
- 1 met
- 1 not met

Most token promises are not due because the token does not exist yet. We log them now and check them at the launch.
| Promise | Date | Status | What the record shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Token launch in Q3 2026 | 2026 (exact date not found) | ✗Not met | The launch is now planned for Q4 2026, and the points programme planned to end in Q3 was extended because of unnamed partnerships. We did not open the original statement. datawallet, Bitrue |
| A public bug bounty | 16 Mar 2026 | ✓Met | Immunefi lists an active program, last updated 15 Oct 2026, paying up to $100,000 for critical smart contract bugs. One media page still called it planned. Immunefi |
| Smart contracts audited by Zellic and Spearbit, with reports public | Mar 2026 (Immunefi entry, 13 Mar) | ?Can't verify | Immunefi says audit reports are hosted on Variational’s documents. We could not open them. One summary said full reports were not public; DefiLlama lists no audits. Immunefi, datawallet |
| Open Omni to the public in select jurisdictions | 20 May 2026 | ?Can't verify | Omni was invite-only on that date. A later page lists only the US and Canada as restricted. Current access not confirmed. Fortune |

| 100% of treasury-directed revenue to buy and burn VAR | 24 Sep 2026 | ?Not due | Earlier documents described only a discretionary part of fees, so the terms were tightened. Check after the launch. Bitrue |
| Publish total supply, the team and investor split, and full utility closer to launch | 24 Sep 2026 | ?Not due | Not published as of 27 Oct 2026. Bitrue |
NOTR entry-gate checks
A project must pass all four required checks to go to a NOTR vote. So far: 0 passed, 1 partial, and 3 that cannot be run until the token contract exists.
| Check | Result | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Contract verified on the explorer (required) | ?Not possible yet | VAR has not been issued. The protocol’s own contracts are on Arbitrum; we did not read them. |
| No hidden mint or admin rights (required) | ?Not possible yet | There is no token contract to read. Who can change supply rules will need checking at the launch. |
| Token can be sold (required) | ?Not possible yet | The token does not trade. CoinGecko shows no price. |
| Links match (required) | ◐Partial | CoinGecko, DefiLlama and Immunefi agree on the name, the site (variational.io, omni.variational.io) and the X account @variational_io. There is no token address yet to match. |
| Audit | ◐Partial | Zellic and Spearbit are named and Immunefi says reports are published on the project’s documents. We could not open them; DefiLlama lists none. |
| Known team | ✓Passed | Two named founders with press coverage and named lead investors. The operating entity is not named. |
| Open distribution and unlock schedule | ◐Partial | Three allocation shares and the insider lock are published. Total supply, the team and investor split, the date and the reserve rules are not. |
Risk register
| Risk | Level | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| One counterparty for every trade | ▲High | The OLP is the counterparty to every Omni trade, so its solvency underpins all positions. Team capital seeds it today; outside deposits are planned after a track record. |
| Token terms unpublished | ▲High | Total supply, the team and investor split, the launch date, the reserve rules and full utility are all missing, so structure cannot be judged. |
| OLP opacity and rejected quotes | ◆Medium | The OLP does not fully disclose positions or hedging results, and can reject quotes in extreme volatility. |
| Incentive-driven activity | ◆Medium | Volume and open interest grew during a points programme; organic share unknown. |
| First-year float | ◆Medium | 32% is unlocked at launch and held by users who earned points; 50% is locked for 12 months; the 18% reserve is released at the Foundation’s discretion. |
| Buyback scale | ◆Medium | Treasury revenue was about $0.65M in four weeks in one report, 20% of spreads. The promise is 100% of that amount. |
| Audit evidence | ◆Medium | Audits are named but we could not read them; DefiLlama lists none. An audit lowers but does not remove exploit risk. |
| Access and legal | ◆Medium | US and Canada excluded; beta status means features and rules can change at the team’s discretion; the legal entity is not named. |
| Leverage for users | ◆Medium | Up to 50× on major pairs; a move of about 2% against a position can wipe out its margin. |
| Data quality of our own sources | ◆Medium | No grade A source. Cumulative volume differs by 2.3× across pages, and several figures come from summaries. |

Verdict and reasoning
Not yet. We answer NOTR’s three questions from public facts, as of 27 Oct 2026. Because the token does not exist, the question is whether it is ready to launch as announced.
1. Is it safe? Partly
- Named auditors (Zellic and Spearbit) and an active bug bounty of up to $100,000 are real signals, and we could not open the reports.
- The design concentrates risk: one counterparty with partly disclosed positions, and rejected quotes in fast markets.
- There is nothing to check on the token itself: no contract, no admin rights to read, no sell test.
2. Are the price and structure fair? Open
- The announced shares are clear: 32% for users, 18% reserve, 50% for insiders. Total supply, the insider split, the date and the reserve rules are not.
- A 12-month lock followed by at least three years of vesting is a long schedule, and unclaimed user tokens are burned.
- The buyback promise is 100% of treasury revenue, which was about $0.65M in four weeks in one report. We do not judge value; the scale is small against the valuation guesses others have made.
- Whatever the launch price is, fairness cannot be judged without total supply.
3. Does it keep its word? Mixed
- The launch slipped from Q3 to Q4 (not met). The bug bounty is live (met).
- The buyback terms were tightened, which is a change in the holders’ favour.
- Audit publication and public access cannot be confirmed; six of eight logged promises cannot be checked or are not due.
What would change our view
- Towards “Ready”: the audit reports published and readable; total supply, the team and investor split, the launch date and the reserve rules published; the token contract published before launch for checking; results of the OLP shown; and one explained figure for cumulative volume.
- Towards “Not ready”: audit reports that are missing or contradict the claims; a token contract with admin or mint rights beyond what is announced; an insider share larger than announced; or launch terms that differ from the September announcement.
We will update this page when the project answers or the facts change. Not investment advice, and we do not assess price.

Method, selection and limits
Why this project. It is a large derivatives venue with a token launch planned within weeks, it is not a top asset, it has made dated public statements we can track, and its token terms are documented in part. We did not pick it for any view on price.
What we did:
- Read press coverage, exchange announcements, the Immunefi program page and DefiLlama’s page and open-interest data, and compared them with each other.
- Checked CoinGecko for a listing: a VAR page exists with no price or supply.
- Logged each public promise with its date, listed every conflict between sources, and computed the buyback scale from the stated figures.
- Prepared nine questions for the project.
What we did not do:
- Read Variational’s own website, documents or audit reports; they could not be opened from our environment.
- Read the protocol’s contracts on Arbitrum. The token contract does not exist yet.
- Confirm the revenue figures, which come from one news flash.

Glossary: the terms in plain words
Click a term to open its explanation. Underlined words in the text above link here.
Perpetual futures (perps)
A contract to bet on a price going up or down with no end date, usually with borrowed money (leverage). Traders pay or receive a regular funding amount to keep it open.
Open interest
The total value of positions that are open at the same moment. It shows how much money is riding on a platform. It is not the same as trading volume, which counts every trade over a period.
Counterparty and liquidity provider (OLP)
On Omni every trader trades against one pool, the OLP, not against other traders. If the pool fails, everyone’s positions depend on that. It also sets the prices it offers and can refuse a quote, called a last-look rejection, when markets move fast.
Points and airdrop
Points are a score for using a project. An airdrop gives free tokens, here in proportion to points. Points can push people to trade more than they otherwise would, which inflates activity numbers.
TGE (token generation event)
The day a project’s token is first created and released to the public.
Fully diluted value (FDV)
The price multiplied by the total supply that will ever exist, including tokens not yet released. It shows how large the project would be valued if all tokens traded at today’s price.
Vesting and cliff
A schedule that releases tokens to a group, such as the team or investors, gradually instead of all at once. A cliff or lock-up is a waiting period at the start during which nothing is released. Each unlock adds supply that buyers have to absorb.
Buyback and burn
The project uses revenue to buy its own token on the market and destroys it. That reduces supply. How much it matters depends on how large the revenue is compared with the token’s value.
Audit and bug bounty
An audit is a review of a project’s contract code by an outside security firm. A bug bounty pays outsiders who find flaws. Both can find bugs; neither guarantees that the code is safe.
Block explorer
A public website that shows what is on a blockchain: a token’s supply, its holders, every transfer and the contract code. Anyone can check it without an account.
